Women's artistic gymnastics

Women’s artistic gymnastics is a discipline of gymnastics that focuses on the performance of various gymnastic routines by female athletes.

It is one of the most popular and widely recognized forms of gymnastics, showcased at the Olympic Games and other international competitions. Women’s artistic gymnastics requires a combination of strength, flexibility, balance, and grace.

In women’s artistic gymnastics, there are four main apparatuses or events on which gymnasts compete:

  1. Vault: In the vault event, gymnasts sprint down a runway and perform a powerful springboard jump onto a vaulting table. They execute different skills such as twists and flips while demonstrating height, distance, and clean execution.

  2. Uneven Bars: The uneven bars consist of two horizontal bars set at different heights. Gymnasts perform a series of swings, releases, and transitions between the bars, combining elements of strength and coordination. They demonstrate impressive routines that involve high-flying releases, intricate hand placements, and precise timing.

  3. Balance Beam: The balance beam is a narrow, elevated beam that requires a combination of acrobatic skills, balance, and poise. Gymnasts perform a variety of movements, including leaps, jumps, turns, acrobatic elements, and dynamic combinations. Staying on the beam while executing difficult skills with precision is a significant challenge.

  4. Floor Exercise: The floor exercise is a routine performed on a sprung floor mat. Gymnasts perform a choreographed routine to music, combining tumbling passes with dance elements. The routine showcases a gymnast’s power, flexibility, and artistic expression. Gymnasts perform a variety of acrobatic skills such as flips, twists, and somersaults, along with dance elements like leaps, turns, and expressive movements.
